Michi – Roses (Spotify)

Singer-songwriter Michi breaks out with “Roses”

The song, an indie-pop ballad, could have easily gone unnoticed as just another love song from an up-and-coming singer. But Michi, who oozes female-rock star appeal, turned heads for another reason – singing a heart-breaking tale of unrequited love – for another woman.

The music video for “Roses” features “La Casa de Papel” actress, Florencia Nocetti, and is directed by Paula Amor.

The clip is a raw and heartbreaking tale of domestic violence that surpasses sexual orientation – though it’s a story that many within the LGBTQ community can connect with.

Most outlets have championed Michi as a “lesbian folk artist,” a label she is proud to wear. “Visibility is important within the LGBTQ community – especially among lesbians. I remember turning on the radio and hearing female artists crooning love ballads about men and feeling like I couldn’t relate to these songs. But then when Melissa Etheridge came out of the closet, I thought to myself, ‘wow, she’s an incredible artist and is using her music as a platform to discuss her experiences as a lesbian woman.’ In a way, her stories and her songs made me feel visible too.”

Michi’s musical history has been moving forward ever since. She has since traveled the world, with her miniature rainbow guitar in tow, selling out venues in thirteen countries and counting. Michi and her band have performed nine-consecutive years on the main stage at the U.S. Capital Pride Festival in Washington D.C., in front of crowds of 250,000. It is on this stage that Michi and her band have opened for numerous international recording artists including Miley Cyrus, DJ Marshmello, Zara Larsson, Carly Rae Jepsen, Meghan Trainor, Rita Ora, Alessia Cara, Betty Who, Troye Sivan, Kelly Rowland, Chely Wright & Icona Pop.

In addition to music, Michi is a community outreach and diversity inclusion activist and helps raise money and awareness for LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS service organizations worldwide through speaking engagements and benefit concerts. Assembling together an all new band, Michi celebrated the release of “Roses” with a benefit concert that helped raise money for LGBTQ-youth shelter home, Fundación Eddy.
