Old Wooden Mallet is a quiet, intimate little song written at an upright piano in Paul Dodgson’s mother’s empty house in England, just after she had left it for the last time to live in a care home. It is one of those songs made up of fragmentary images and half remembered phrases. The record features the piano and keyboard playing of producer Richard Dunn, who can be heard adding Hammond magic to Van Morrison’s latest album.
