Anime Girl is an unapologetic celebration of geek culture and unleashing the freak within from former tropical crooner and Dominican musical theatre star Cristal Marie. A shocking departure from the ballads and jazz standards that characterized her award-winning career in Latin America—where she recently performed an iconic duet with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli—Anime Girl sees the artist integrating elements of EDM and rock in a sleek beat-driven pop production, punctuated by her rapid-fire bilingual rap style. Produced by Jon Buscema and co-written by Stolar (Aloe Blacc, Bebe Rexha, Selena Gomez) and Cari Cole (Circle of Fire), the song comes on the heels of YouTube’s first video anime club Get In The Robot’s one-year anniversary, a channel with over 300,000 subscribers where Cristal acts as writer and host, along with celebrating 1,000,000 subscribers for their sister video-game channel The Leaderboard.
Performed for the first time at YouTube Space NY, Anime Girl marks the start of a new phase in the Dominican artist’s career, one where she breaks free from former management that kept her geek side in the dark and embraces more fully who she is and what she loves. Now she is finally ready to share her true self—no matter how strange that self is—with the world, inviting everyone along for the journey. “Join me, join me…” she whispers, “anything can happen.”
